The Great Kemble Chili Cook-Off was held May 30, 2015 at the Kemble-Sarawak United Church
Everyone really enjoyed the Great Kemble Chili Cook-Off. It was indeed a hot, spicy and competitive affair. The fun began with Keith Davidson piping the chili cooking teams into the hall to their serving stations and continued with serving ladles flying until the last bit of chili was sampled.
6 chili samples plus roll, coleslaw, beverage and dessert
We tasted:
- “Wildwood Western Chicken Chili”,
- “Signature Campfire Chili”,
- “The Beano Banditos Chili”,
- “New Zealand Vegetarian Chili”,
- “DeJong Acres’ Rabbit and Goose Chili with Maple Syrup and Bacon”,
- “The Red Hot Chili Pepper Piper’s Dynamite Chili” and
- “Lola’s Cabin Chili”.

We had 107 people attend our Chili Cook-Off, the event was a great success, everyone had a good time. We especially enjoyed the Beano Banditos mascot “The Talking Chicken”. The chicken even lit up as he clucked, as did the children’s faces he was talking to. It was noticed that the chicken’s voice somewhat resembled that of Peter Reesor, perhaps just a coincidence.
As they say in New Zealand “Kia Ora”, whatever that means. Team New Zealand led us all through a ritual chant to liven up the event even further.
The Chili Cook-Off attire was simply incredible! Competitors and attendees outdid themselves dressing for the event. Please see the photos to appreciate the hats, t-shirts, aprons, bibs, belt buckles, painted faces and so on. As well the hall was decorated with colourful tablecloths, balloons, posters, signage and more.
Apparently the Red Hot Chili Pepper Piper’s Dynamite Chili was so hot that someone offered antacids! The Drinks Table did report folks going through a lot of water and lemonade; so I guess some hot, spicy chili was served up indeed.
It was a great neighbourhood rivalry with everyone ending up winners in the end.
